Human Design Simplified: What the Strategy “To Respond” Means

The Generator and Manifesting Generator strategy explained

You’ve found out that you’re a Generator or Manifesting Generator type in Human Design. Now what? How do you apply this information to better your life?

The most practical, tangible way is by following your strategy.

Each type in Human Design has a specific strategy. Generators and Manifesting Generators share the same strategy: to respond (also called “wait to respond.”)

It’s not exactly what it sounds like. The “response” refers to what’s called your sacral response, which only the Generator and Manifesting Generator type have. You can think of it as your gut instinct.

It’s a visceral feeling in your body towards or away from something, or an instinctual sound like “uh-huh” or “uh-uh.”

The sacral response is simple and primal. It will tell you one of three responses: yes, no, or not yet. The sacral response won’t come with an explanation. Like when someone says, “I just have a gut feeling” and can’t explain it.

For Generators and Manifesting Generators following their strategy “to respond” means waiting for their gut to respond either positively or negatively to something that shows up in their world.

Why is it called the sacral response?

All Generators and Manifesting Generators have a defined sacral center in their Human Design. If you have a defined sacral center, it will be colored in on your chart (versus white).

This center corresponds with the gut instinct. Because the center is defined in all Generators and Manifesting Generators, these types have reliable access to their gut instinct. The old adage “trust your gut” applies to them but not to the other three types (Projectors, Manifestors, or Reflectors).

What is strategy in Human Design?

Your strategy is a highly actionable aspect of your design. You can use it every single day to:

  • align with better opportunities

  • create opportunities if none are showing up

  • find a relationship or a job

  • align with your purpose without knowing what it is

  • decide what to eat for dinner

Strategy is how I teach my clients to “live their Human Design” so that it can actually transform their life and not just live as theory in their heads.

What “to respond” means

As a Generator or Manifesting Generator, your gut is always responding to your environment, whether you are aware of it or not. The sacral response is triggered by something outside of you, such as:

  • a person who crosses your path

  • a yes-or-no question someone asks you

  • a suggestion someone gives you

  • an idea that comes up in conversation or a podcast

  • something you see while scrolling on social media

  • a job listing on a website

  • a profile on a dating app

It’s imperative for Generators and Manifesting Generators to pay attention to what the sensations in their body is telling them in the moment to outside stimuli.

Again, the sacral response is going to tell you a yes, no, or not yet .

A yes could feel like:

  • a slight pull towards something

  • a feeling of excitement or butterflies in your stomach

  • a feeling of expansion

  • feeling lit up or a “full-body yes”

A no could feel like:

  • a slight pull away from something or a contraction

  • a drop in your belly

  • a feeling of dread

  • a feeling of drain

A not yet could feel like:

  • a physical feeling of hesitancy

  • an utterance of “um” or “hmm”

The biggest challenge for Generators and Manifesting Generators is not to let their mind talk them out of their sacral or gut response.

Note: You’re always responding as a Generator or Manifesting Generator from the moment you wake up. It could be as simple as humming along to a tune that comes on your Spotify shuffle while you’re making your coffee. Your humming is a response. I use this as an example to show you how simple and instinctual (and mindless) the gut response is.

What’s the difference between “wait to respond” and “wait for the invitation”?

“To respond” or “wait to respond” is the Generator and Manifesting Generator strategy.

“Wait for the invitation” is the Projector type’s strategy.

The key difference is that Generators and Manifesting Generators don’t need an invitation or something directed at them to respond to it. They can respond to anything external, whether or not it’s meant for them directly.

For example, as a Generator or Manifesting Generator, you don’t need to wait for someone to reach out to offer you a job (wait for an invitation). You can browse job listings and wait to see which ones light you up (wait to respond). Then, you can pursue those job opportunities by applying for them.

As my Human Design mentor says, “You might not know if something is right for you or how you feel about it until it shows up in your world.”

This is why it’s not recommended for Generators and Manifesting Generators to pursue ideas that come out of thin air. Instead, open up your awareness to what’s around you. Get out into the world or go online. See what shows up and wait for your gut to respond to what you see or hear.

Tips for following your strategy “to respond”

As a Generator or Manifesting Generator your aura is designed to be magnetic, always drawing things to you. The secret is the more you’re lit up by doing the things you love, the more will show up in your orbit.

If nothing is showing up, give yourself more input. Like get on a dating app if you want a relationship so you have profiles to respond to. Options are helpful for triggering your gut response. So are yes-or-no questions. Ask people in your life to not give you open-ended questions like, “What do you want to eat for dinner?” But instead ask: “Do you want steak?” (yes or no).

The sacral response is always in the moment. So what’s a no today, could be a yes tomorrow, so it’s always good to check back in with your gut on the same decision periodically.

Can you initiate as a Generator or Manifesting Generator?

Once your gut gives you the green light (such as experiencing a full-body yes), you can absolutely pursue something. But you need to wait for the gut to signal the go-ahead.

Only the Manifestor type in Human Design is meant to initiate action on a whim. For example, it would be correct for a Manifestor to call their high school crush out of the blue to ask them out whereas for the generator types, it’s better to wait until someone crosses your path (either online or IRL) before you initiate.

For example, you’re at a party and see someone across the room who really isn’t your type, but you feel a physical pull towards them. So you cross the room and strike up a conversation. Unexpectedly, while you two chat you get butterflies in your stomach. Trust your body’s direction—the pull to start a conversation, the butterflies once you’re talking —that gives you the green light to ask that person out!

You can absolutely initiate and pursue someone or something as a Generator or Manifesting Generator but only after your sacral response gives you the go-ahead.

How to use the strategy “to respond” to find your purpose or your person

From a Human Design perspective, when you follow your specific strategy and authority, it aligns you with the right relationships and opportunities. You don’t need to figure out your purpose if you honor your gut yeses and nos. Trust that following them will keep you on your right path in life.

You can think of the yeses of your sacral response as bread crumbs to follow without knowing the outcome or where things will lead. They could very well lead you to your life purpose or life partner.

Be open to what’s right for you might not be the idea you have in your head, such as the list of your dream partner or career you’re trying so hard to manifest. Often it’s not the list; it’s the unexpected thing that lights you up the moment you see it.

This requires two things of you:

  1. your awareness to what is around you

  2. being in touch with your body’s natural responses

When you’re stuck in your head, it can be hard to notice opportunities presenting themselves and what your body is responding to.

Often Generators and Manifesting Generators can get off track because they’re doing what they think they should be doing instead of following what genuinely excites them.

How to use the strategy “to respond” to have better boundaries

If you have trouble with boundaries, like saying no, which often Generators and Manifesting Generators do, you can think of your gut response as a boundary. It’s this built-in mechanism that shows you:

  1. what you actually have the energy to do

  2. what’s the right thing to make happen

  3. the right timing to do something

Example 1: Your friend asks you to hang out and you feel an immediate pit in your stomach. That’s a no. Your nos need to be honored even if your mind tells you I should hang out with them because they’re having a really hard time right now.

Listening to your gut response is how you avoid burnout as a Generator or Manifesting Generator. Your gut will reliably tell you what you have the energy for.

Example 2: A business coach you’re working with suggests you start a podcast. You have a sudden feeling of exhaustion. That’s a no, even if what they’re saying is “sound advice.”

Example 3: Six months later, a friend is talking about starting a podcast and your gut suddenly lights. Just hearing them talk about their podcast sparks something in you. Now is the time for you to start a podcast of your own.

Reminder: The sacral response is always in the present moment, so it can be good to check back in months later on a thing because it can change.

How to optimize the strategy “to respond” to get more of what you want

Generators and Manifesting Generators have a magnetic aura (called “open and enveloping” in traditional Human Design). The more lit up you are, the more magnetic you are for opportunities to find you.

Even if what lights you up has nothing to do with your job search, the more you’re doing that hobby that brings you satisfaction, the more magnetic you become in general.

Also, releasing a commitment or obligation that drains you — no matter how small — can also help make space for something aligned to come in.

Don’t be afraid to prioritize your satisfaction and joy as a Generator or Manifesting Generator. It’s actually not selfish because when the generator types are lit up and excited by life, it spills over and uplifts those around them.

If you’re a Generator or Manifesting Generator and feeling resistance or stuck in your life try:

  • prioritizing your daily satisfaction

  • opening up your awareness to the world around you

  • trusting what your body is saying to whatever life floats your way

Following your sacral response takes practice and trust, especially in a mind-centered world. But the gift of being a Generator or Manifesting Generator is having this internal compass that will always connect you to your truth.
