What is Strategy in Human Design?

The easiest way to align with your best life

One of the most actionable pieces of Human Design is your strategy. Each of the five types has a specific strategy. So if you know your type, you automatically know your strategy!

Your strategy tells you how best to exchange your energy with others and with the world. Following your strategy reduces resistance in your life, career, and relationships. It aligns you with the best opportunities and people for you.

Here are the strategies for each type.

Generators: to respond

“To respond” means waiting for your gut to react to something before committing. You have a powerful gut instinct that can be felt in the body. It’s always responding to what’s around you: telling you moment-by-moment if something or someone is a hell yes or a no.

You have a magnetic energy and don’t need to chase after things. Life flows best when you wait to see what shows up in your world. When your gut pulls you in a certain direction, take action. When you feel it pull away from something, honor that no. Don’t let your mind override your gut feeling.

The reward for following your strategy: satisfaction and joy

Manifesting Generators: to respond

You are also here to wait for your gut response. Your energy is magnetic, which means you’re here to see what shows up in your world instead of initiating action. Practice patience and awareness to see who or what appears. When your gut lights up, that’s a signal for you to go for it.

Because you’re designed to pivot in your actions, it can also be helpful to inform those around you who will be affected by your sudden change in direction. Give them the heads up! Trust in any given moment where your energy is pulling you, over what your mind thinks you should do.

Projectors: wait for an invitation

You are a gifted guide but your guidance isn’t for everyone. Waiting to be invited to share what you see is a way to protect your energy, which operates in ebbs and flows, so you’re not wasting it on people who aren’t ready or able to hear you. Your perspective is wise but giving unsolicited advice creates resistance in your life.

Wait to be invited into job opportunities, romantic commitments (including moving in with someone), and friendships. Not all invitations are correct, so be sure you feel recognized and valued by the parties involved before committing. Be patient and trust that your powerful presence alone will elicit invitations.

The reward for living your strategy: success and energy

Manifestors: to inform

You are here to initiate action. Don’t wait for invitations or for things to come to you. You’re designed to follow the ideas and impulses that arise in you. Your urges are your compass. Before you act, let the people in your life (or who are affected by your decision) know what you’re about to do.

Informing is not about asking for permission. It’s your tool to mitigate resistance in your life and clear the way for you to take off. Your brilliant urges often come in moments of rest, so give yourself plenty of downtime.

Reflectors: wait a lunar cycle

While the traditional strategy for Reflectors is to wait out the 28-day lunar cycle before committing to something or someone, this doesn’t really explain your optimal way to exchange energy with the world. Waiting a lunar cycle speaks more to your authority: your decision-making process.

Waiting to be invited or initiated by others is an alternative strategy for Reflectors that I learned from my Human Design mentor. You are so wise but don’t want to waste your insightful reflections where they’re not solicited or valued. Lastly, the best opportunities come when you’re in the right spaces, so be in places that feel good.

The reward for following your strategy: surprise and delight

While the Human Design system has many deeper layers that can tell you about who you came here to be, following your strategy is a simple tool to access your highest potential and self. It allows your purpose to unfold naturally, instead of efforting and trying to figure it all out.

Your unique Human Design chart is not just meant to be understood by the mind but is something to be lived. It only works if you work it. Try on your strategy for yourself, experiment with it, and see if it improves your life.
