What is the Projector Strategy in Human Design?

“Wait for the invitation” explained

So you’ve learned that you’re the Projector type in Human Design—the guide, the teacher, the leader—here to have wise perspectives and be brilliant at your thing.

Then you find out your strategy “wait for the invitation.” You wonder how you can ever be successful if you aren’t supposed to make things happen but instead wait for opportunities and people to come to you (what “wait for the invitation” essentially means). Or perhaps you feel relief. Or maybe this is the first time you’ve heard of your strategy as a Projector.

Each of the 5 types in Human Design has a strategy. This is a highly actionable piece of your design that helps you use your energy in a way that creates better opportunities and more aligned relationships.

For Projectors, the strategy “wait for the invitation” is their ticket to success in career, in relationships, and in life. And Projectors don’t need to wait to be invited for everything.

“Success” is actually what’s called the Projector signature. It’s the reward when Projectors follow their strategy. So, as a Projector, you can think of your strategy as what to follow to become more successful in life.

When do Projectors need to wait for the invitation?

The Projector strategy “wait for the invitation” (also called “wait to be invited” or “wait for an invitation”) applies to the following 4 categories:

1. Wait to be invited to share your guidance, your advice, your perspective, or how to improve/fix something.

Even though your biggest gift as a Projector is how you see (others, systems, how things can be done better ), you need to wait to be invited before offering what you see.

This can be challenging if you’re a Projector because you see so much and so clearly what can help someone. But it will repel people if you give unsolicited advice. You’ll experience a lot of resistance from others. You can come across as a know-it-all or bossy. Pushing what you see on others will push them away

Instead, try asking questions. Projectors actually guide best by asking astute questions. So you might as well practice this when no one is asking for your perspective.

2. Wait to be invited into a job or career opportunity

This means wait to be invited to work with someone, for someone, for a company, or to collaborate with someone. You don’t have to wait for an invitation to work for yourself.

I don’t recommend pitching yourself to potential employers. Of course, this can be hard when you’re financially challenged. Here are a few things you can do if you need a job:

  • put the word out there to your network that you’re looking for work

  • tell people what you do; that can elicit invitations from others

  • hire a recruiter that will pair your talents to potential employers and do the pitching work for you

The strategy “wait for the invitation” is not meant to limit you but is a tool to help you correctly enter the right opportunities and career instead of the wrong ones.

You’ll have more success when someone offers you a job or position because they see something in you rather than you selling yourself to them. For me personally, as a Projector, it feels a lot better when I’m directly approached for a job than when I try to get someone to hire me.

3. Wait to be invited into a friendship or a romantic relationship

To enter the correct relationship, wait for the other person to initiate: to ask you to hang out or out on a date. You can think of it as who makes the first move. For a Projector in alignment, that’s never you.

Even if the vibes are there—and Projectors you are especially good at reading vibes!—wait for the other person to extend an invitation.

The strategy “wait for the invitation” is most relevant in the beginning of a relationship. So once you’ve been initiated into a relationship with someone, romantic or platonic, you can initiate hanging out all you want.

4. Wait to be invited to live with someone

The last category that you want to wait for an invitation for is moving in with someone. In other words, don’t initiate living with your boyfriend or girlfriend; wait until they invite you to move in.

Also, wait to be invited into formal commitments, like boyfriend/girlfriend status or marriage. This really gives your relationship a better chance at success.

Two notes on waiting for the invitation

1. Invitations can expire

Even when you’ve followed your strategy “wait for the invitation” it doesn’t mean that the invitation will last forever. Not all relationships or jobs are meant to last, and that doesn’t mean they were incorrect for you or a failure. It might simply mean that the invitation for that commitment has expired. You can always have a clarifying conversation if you suspect the energy is no longer there.

2. Energetic versus formal invitations

You may have heard talk of “energetic” vs. formal invitations for Projectors. An energetic invitation means that if you can tell if someone is interested, leaned in, or there’s a vibe, that counts as an invitation.

A formal invitation is a verbal or written invitation, such as someone asking you out or someone booking your services online or reaching out to you via email to offer you a job.

My take: I personally don’t go by “energetic” invitations because Projectors are often so desperate for invitations that they can overstep. I would only use “energetic” invitations to lean into a dynamic if you know the other person is a Projector.

What do you NOT need to wait for an invitation for as a Projector?

Here’s a list of scenarios that you don’t need an invitation for in order to take action:

  • moving somewhere by yourself

  • starting a business

  • starting a podcast or blog

  • sharing what you do on social media

  • building a website

  • studying something or going to school for something

  • creating something, like writing a book or building a robot

  • running for office (getting elected would be the invitation)

This is not a complete list. A general rule of thumb is that an “invitation” refers to when you are directly exchanging your energy with another person.

Why do Projectors need to wait for the invitation?

Why all this fuss on waiting for the invitation?

The invitation is a powerful tool to safeguard your energy and provide you with boundaries as a Projector.

As a Projector, you don’t have consistent energy. Your energy is designed to ebb and flow. Waiting for an invitation helps you preserve your energy by not wasting it on the wrong things, like guiding people who aren’t asking for your guidance.

How do you know which invitations to accept as a Projector?

Just because you receive an invitation, it doesn’t mean you should accept it. Settling can be tempting because invitations don’t always come around.

Here’s how to discern which invitations to accept:

  1. Use your authority, your unique decision-making process in Human Design, when it comes to accepting or declining an invitation.

  2. Pay attention to your energy levels. Often the right invitations will give you energy— and the wrong ones will drain you

  3. You feel valued and seen by whomever is offering the invitation

What is the full Projector strategy?

The full Projector strategy as shared by Ra Uru Hu, the founder of Human Design, is “wait to be recognized and invited.”

It’s really important for Projectors to feel valued and seen for their specific gifts and insights by whomever is inviting them. Recognition is just as important as the invitation.

You could be invited into a job where you aren’t seen for what you’re truly good at (an invitation but no recognition). For example, this might be a position where your value depends on how many hours you can work, not how good you are at managing people.

Another example would be a classical pianist invited to play a rock concert. That invitation to perform comes with a lack of recognition for their specific gifts and would not lead to a successful outcome.

Note: Receiving ample compensation is often a form of recognition for Projectors. It makes them feel valued if they are paid well for their skills and guidance.

How to optimize the Projector strategy “wait for the invitation”

To state the obvious, but often overlooked point, “waiting for the invitation” requires waiting.

Waiting takes patience.

Waiting is the opposite of chasing or acting out of anxiety or scarcity.

Waiting can be active.

Projectors can optimize these waiting periods by:

  1. Resting and emptying out. As a Projector you are energetically sensitive and your energy isn’t consistent. You need to take good care of your body and have energy hygiene practices.

  2. Learning and mastering your craft. Whatever it is you want to be seen for, get good at. Study. Practice.

How do you magnetize invitations when none are coming?

Ra Uru Hu, the founder of Human Design, says “recognition and invitations come from silence.”

There is truth to that… but also people need to be able to find you.

Tip #1: Put yourself out there.

Exposure can feel hard for some Projectors but the majority of the population are Generators and Manifesting Generators, and they need outside stimulus to respond to. [I learned this tip from my successful Human Design mentor.]

For example, if you want to start a business, build a website for it. This broad exposure to the internet will give people a place to find you without you having to pitch yourself individually. Remember, you don’t need an invitation to start your own business or build a website.

Another example: if you want a relationship, you don’t need an invitation to put yourself on a dating app. Dating apps can work for Projectors because it makes you available for people to find you. You can also tell your network you’re looking and let them help you.

Tip #2: Be inviting!

Are you someone people would want to date?

Are you someone people want to hire?

Self-improvement, such as mastering your craft or relationship skills, can go a long way for Projectors.

Tip #3: Value yourself.

Often recognition and invitations come when Projectors value themselves first. Work on self-validation of what you have to offer.

Tip #4: Let your aura do the talking.

The Projector aura (aka energy that others feel at a subconscious level) is actually designed to draw in invitations. This is why you don’t need to try so hard. Your energy is potent and powerful. Your aura is designed to be seen and noticed.

☼

Often recognition comes from unexpected places and not always from those we want to see us. Not everyone will see you—whether you’re a Projector or not—that’s just life!

If you’re a Projector, instead of pushing yourself onto those who aren’t inviting you, or who don’t see you, or who don’t take your advice, invest more in places and people that do.

Lastly, Projectors, you are so good at seeing others and what they’re gifted at. I want to emphasize how your own life can transform when you value yourself and see your own gifts.

Stop chasing.

Stop settling.

And remember how powerful you are.
